As the most common mass-produced switching diode, the 1N4148 replaced the older 1N914. They differed mainly in their leakage current specification, however, today most manufacturers list common specifications. For example, Vishay lists the same leakage current for both parts: 25 nA at -20 V, 25°C.

What is a 1N914 diode used for?

1N914 diodes are used in power conversion and rectifiers can be made with these diodes and converts AC to DC to provide better performance. These diodes protect extremely responsive electronic devices from overvoltage. In standard situations, these types of diodes are connected in reverse bias & they don't conduct.
